Macedonian moussaka

Well the plan was to make Greek Moussaka , but my husband was to one to go grocery shopping and ummm he didn’t “find”the eggplants

But in any case this turned out delicious

Basically a meat and potato casserole and modified to bit to my desi taste I love that there’s no cheese in this one so little easy on calories 😂 as I will be making the Greek one with cheese soon POTATOES:

6-8 medium cut into thin round slices ,I usually never peel mine but please peel them if thats what you prefer,

Boil potatoes in salted boiling water 6-8 minutes till a bit soft but not fully cooked

Then drain and pour into a pan filled with ice and cold water, just cold water is fine too MEAT: 2 tablespoons olive oil

3-4 garlic cloves minced 1 onion, diced

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

3/4 tsp chilli flakes -optional 1 1/2 pound ground beef 1 1/2 teaspoon paprika 2 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste

1/2 tsp dried herbs like oregano , basil I used my fav greek herb mix by -optional

1 cup water or stock of choice

SAUCE : 2 cups milk

3 eggs

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp dried herbs

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp or to taste salt

Mix this all up and whisk

  • Seasoning for potatoes is optional but I need a good amount of flavour , doesn’t need to be spicy but cant eat bland food, so if you are like me do this step

  • 11/2 tbsp butter melted

  • 1/4 tsp dried herbs

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp chilli flakes

  • Mix it all up

  • METHOD:

  • Preheat oven to 375˚

  • Heat olive oil in your cooking pan

  • Add meat and garlic fry a bit and add onions

  • When meat browns all other ingredients for meat add in and fry few minutes

  • Add 1 cup water or stock

  • Cook and cover till meat cooked and dry any fluids

  • Grease your baking dish.you will need medium to large dish for this, I used the oil from meat sauce to grease🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Now drain the cooked potatoes and add the butter seasoning in them and carefully mix

  • Layer 1/3 of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of baking dish.

  • Now on top add half of the beef mixture.

  • Again 1/3 potato slices over beef.

  • Add remaining beef and top remaining potatoes

  • Pour the milk sauce over the potatoes.

  • Bake for 45-55 minutes, until sauce is set and potatoes are golden

  • It took me close to 60 minutes for it to get the nice color

  • Sprinkle more dried herbs and chilli flakes on top if you like

  • Wait 8-10 minutes and then dig in!

  • We had a salad with it
